London is one of those cities that reveals itself in layers from royal landmarks, hidden alleys, world-class food, and neighbourhoods that each feel like their own village.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, start here.

A Local Perspective: What London Is Really Like

I lived in London for 10 years, not just visiting but navigating it daily. I commuted across the city, explored neighbourhoods, ate my way through markets, and learned how London really works through experience.

Here’s what most guides don’t tell you.

What Surprised Me About London

London looks compact on a map, but it does not behave like one.

  • Distances are deceptive
What looks like a short walk can easily take 30 to 40 minutes. Areas that seem close together often are not in practical terms.
  • Every neighbourhood feels like a different city
Camden, Chelsea, Shoreditch, and Notting Hill all have completely different personalities. You are not just visiting one place, you are moving between distinct areas.
  • The best experiences are not always the famous ones
Some of the most memorable moments come from wandering a quiet street, finding a local market, or sitting in a pub after a long walk.
  • The transport system is excellent but takes time to learn
Once you understand it, getting around is straightforward. At the beginning, it can feel confusing.
  • Most Londoners could not tell you how to get to famous sites – they live there they don’t visit touristy sites.

Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To)

  • Trying to do too much in one day
London is tiring if you overplan. Focus on two or three areas each day.
  • Underestimating travel time
Crossing the city takes longer than expected, even using the Underground. Always allow extra time.
  • Staying only in central London
Some of the best experiences are just outside the main tourist areas.
  • Not booking major attractions in advance
Places like the Tower of London can fill up quickly.

What I’d Skip (or Do Differently Next Time)

  • Following a checklist without context
Some attractions are worth visiting, but they are much better when you understand the history behind them.
  • Rushing through landmarks
It is better to see fewer places and enjoy them properly.
  • Eating in obvious tourist areas
Walk a few streets away and you will usually find better food at better prices.
