The Story of Waterford

Founded by the Vikings in 914 AD, Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland. Its name, derived from the Old Norse “Veðrafjörðr,” which translates to “Windy Fjord,” when it was a Viking settlement. Over the centuries, Waterford grew into a thriving port city, playing a crucial role in Ireland’s trade and commerce.

Waterford is steeped in history, particularly the story of Strongbow and Aoife, which played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s medieval past. In 1170, the Norman knight Richard de Clare, better known as Strongbow, arrived in Ireland to support the deposed King of Leinster, Diarmait Mac Murchada. After successfully recapturing Waterford, Strongbow married Diarmait’s daughter, Aoife, in a grand ceremony within the city.

This union not only solidified Strongbow’s claim to Irish lands but also marked the beginning of the Norman influence in Ireland. Their marriage is famously commemorated in a striking statue in Waterford, symbolizing the city’s importance as the gateway for Norman expansion and its enduring legacy in Irish history.

How to Get to Waterford from Dublin

By Car

The journey from Dublin to Waterford by car is a scenic 170-kilometer (105-mile) drive that takes approximately two hours. The fastest route is via the M9 motorway, which offers a smooth and direct path to Waterford. Along the way, you can enjoy views of Ireland’s lush countryside.

By Train

Irish Rail operates regular trains from Dublin’s Heuston Station to Waterford’s Plunkett Station. The journey takes around two and a half hours. Trains are comfortable and offer free Wi-Fi, making them an excellent option for a relaxing trip.

By Bus

Bus Éireann and other private operators provide bus services from Dublin to Waterford. The trip takes about three hours and is an affordable alternative to driving or taking the train. Buses depart from Dublin’s central bus station and stop at Waterford’s bus terminal, conveniently located near the city center.

In the 13th century, the Normans took control of Waterford and built a Gothic cathedral on the same site. However, the current Christ Church a protestant cathedral was constructed in 1773, replacing the medieval structure. The cathedral is also known for its stunning stucco plaster ceiling and elaborate stained glass windows.

Waterford Greenway

Tramore, a seaside town 13 kilometers from Waterford, is famous for its long sandy beach and vibrant surf scene. Surf schools cater to beginners, making it a great spot to catch some waves.

The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens, Tramore

The layout reflects the life and work of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, known in Japan as Koizumi Yakumo, 1850-1904, who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. To trace the journey of his life, related through plants, landscape, water and stone, the visitor follows a guided route through a small walled Victorian garden, an American prairie style garden, and a Greek amphitheatre, before reaching the main sections of the garden that commemorates Hearn’s life and work in Japan.

Particular attention was paid in the design and layout of the gardens to the incorporation of rocks in accordance with Japanese custom and style. The gardens incorporate turtle and crane rock features, a guardian stone, an impressive statue rock, a rock walled grotto and several other representational rocks.

The Ardmore Cliff Walk in County Waterford is a spectacular coastal trail that offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and a rich tapestry of history and natural beauty. This 4-kilometer loop begins in the picturesque village of Ardmore, home to one of Ireland’s oldest Christian settlements.

Along the walk, you’ll encounter fascinating landmarks, such as the iconic Ardmore Round Tower, St. Declan’s Well, and the ruins of a 12th-century cathedral.

The trail winds along dramatic cliffs, revealing panoramic ocean vistas, seabird colonies, and even occasional glimpses of dolphins and seals. Lismore Castle gardens

A 45-minute drive from Waterford, Lismore Castle is a magnificent Gothic Revival castle with stunning gardens. While the castle is privately owned, the gardens are open to visitors.

Opened in 1992, the Lismore Heritage Centre was established to celebrate and share the rich history and heritage of Lismore. Nestled at the foot of the Knockmealdown Mountains, Lismore is renowned for its magnificent Lismore Castle, which dates back to 1185. This historic castle has been home to notable figures, including Broadway performer Adele Astaire and Kathleen Kennedy, sister of John F. Kennedy. While the castle remains a private family residence, visitors can experience its legacy through the Lismore Castle Experience.  

Although the interior of Lismore Castle is not open to the public, the stunning Lismore Castle Gardens are accessible and offer a chance to explore beautifully landscaped grounds. Overlooking the Blackwater Valley, the gardens provide breathtaking views of the surrounding rolling hills and the majestic Knockmealdown Mountains. Located on the edge of the heritage town of Lismore, the gardens complement the town’s charm, with its picture-perfect streets steeped in history and stories waiting to be discovered.

Access to the island is by a private car ferry which operates throughout the day. “Complimentary ferry crossing takes 3 minutes and does not need to be reserved in advance, it departs every 15 minutes. Drive up the beech-lined drive to reach the castle and its 800 years of history.

Local activities include golfing on an 18-hole course, clay-target shooting, a driving range, tennis and croquet. There are also several nature trails and walking paths to explore.

The Anchorage Guest House is situated in Waterford, less than 1 km from Christ Church Cathedral and a 12-minute walk from Reginald’s Tower.
