Best things to do in Knaresborough: A beautiful day trip

I’ve seen loads of stunning photographs of Knaresborough in Yorkshire and just knew I had to visit. Knaresborough, is a picturesque market town in North Yorkshire, with a long history and so much to see and do. Those shots of a beautiful river and an incredible old viaduct brings in many tourists from around the world.

Knaresborough is often called a hidden gem of Yorkshire and many travel writers will tell you that it is not on the tourist radar yet. I’m here to tell you that this is just not true. We went at the end of June for a day trip and the place was packed with tourists and in speaking with the locals they say the place is just crazy in the summer months and overrun by tourists.

Nestled along the River Nidd in North Yorkshire, Knaresborough town is a photographer and artists dream. From its iconic viaduct overlooking the river to its lovely streets lined with shops and cafes, there is no shortage of things to do in Knaresborough. 

Whether you’re a history buff, outdoor enthusiast, or simply looking for a quintessential English village, Knaresborough has something for everyone. Explore the historic Knaresborough Castle, dating back to the 12th century, and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the grounds. Grab a great lunch or coffee at any one of the many pubs and lovely cafes on the river. If you love a good long walk you will want to live here as there are so many captivating natural walkways and hikes.

Take a leisurely stroll along the riverside promenade, visit the famous Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well, or hop on a boat cruise down the river for a unique perspective of the town. 

For those seeking adventure, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring the nearby Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Best time to visit Knaresborough

I highly recommend getting there before the summer hits so avoid July and August and aim for May, June, mid-September through to the winter months.

How can I get to Knaresborough?

You can easily reach Knaresborough by train as it has a train station in the town centre. Additionally, it is just a short drive from various nearby places in Yorkshire.

We are currently staying in Worsborough Dale housesitting which is sort of half way between Leeds and Sheffield. The drive to Knaresborough is just under hour from where we are.

Travelling by train is the most popular and easiest way to reach the centre of Knaresborough. Knaresborough station is located on the Harrogate Line which runs from Leeds to York, trains which are operated by Northern Rail.

By car Knaresborough is around 17 miles west or 30 minutes from York and 18 miles or 35 minutes north of Leeds.

Things to do in Knaresborough

Knaresborough Castle

Explore the ruins of this medieval castle and enjoy stunning views of the River Nidd. There is a paid parking lot just outside the twin towers of the castle and you enter through these towers and you can still see the grooves of the portcullis.

The Castle building was begun around 1312 after the Norman conquest. King Edward II built a massive keep with 12 towers. Within the dungeons of the Castle which still remain today King Richard II was imprisoned before his death at Pontefract.

The castle was also a sanctuary for the men who killed Thomas Becket. King John hunted here and the asstle was only attached twice in 1317 and 1648. It was in 1648 that it was captured by the Parliamentarians and demolished at that time.

On the castle grounds you will also see a putting green and a lawn bowling green. There is also a WWI and WWII memorial. Many searches on the internet talk about how there are ravens at Knaresborough Castle but sadly this is not true anymore.

Parking for the castle is just outside the grounds and there are walkways down to Waterside to enjoy this lovely Yorkshire Town.

This museum gives you a glimpse into the town’s legal history, showcasing exhibits that include original Tudor courtroom furnishings, historical documents, and artifacts related to local governance and justice.  

Mother Shipton Cave and Petrifying Well

Visit England’s oldest tourist attraction and learn about the legend of Mother Shipton, a famous prophetess.

Mother Shipton’s Cave is a renowned for its connection to the legendary prophetess Mother Shipton who was often called a witch. Born Ursula Southeil in 1488, Mother Shipton gained fame for her prophecies, many of which were said to have come true. The cave is part of a larger park that includes the famous Petrifying Well.

The well’s unique mineral-rich waters have the ability to turn objects into stone over time, a phenomenon that has fascinated visitors for centuries.

The site has been a popular tourist destination since the 17th century, alongside the cave and the well, the park features walking trails, a museum, and various interactive displays that bring the legend of Mother Shipton to life.

St. Robert’s Cave

Discover the cave of St. Robert, a hermit from the 12th century, located along the River Nidd.

St. Robert of Knaresborough was a revered hermit from the 12th century, known for his piety and ascetic lifestyle. Born Robert Flower in 1160, he dedicated his life to religious devotion and solitude, living in a cave near Knaresborough. Renowned for his charity, he provided aid to the poor and sick, gaining a reputation for his miraculous healings and profound spiritual insights. St. Robert’s hermitage became a pilgrimage site, drawing visitors seeking his counsel and blessings.

Knaresborough Railway Viaduct

The Knaresborough Viaduct is an iconic railway bridge spanning the River Nidd in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. Completed in 1851, this impressive structure features four majestic arches and stands 78 feet high, providing stunning views of the river and the surrounding town.

The viaduct not only serves as a crucial part of the rail network, connecting Harrogate and York, but also stands as a testament to Victorian engineering.

Knaresborough Market Place

The Market Place in Knaresborough is a bustling hub just a minutes walk from the Castle. Surrounded by quaint shops, cafes, and old stone buildings, every Wednesday, the Market comes alive with a traditional outdoor market, offering a variety of goods including fresh produce, crafts, and antiques.

The market in Knaresborough has a long history dating back to medieval times. It played a crucial role in the town’s economy and growth, serving as a center for trade and commerce. The market traditionally took place in the Market Place, where local farmers, artisans, and traders would gather to sell their goods. Over the centuries, the market evolved to include a variety of products, from fresh produce and livestock to textiles and household goods. 

Visit the market square on Wednesdays for a traditional market experience with local produce and goods. Knaresborough’s market, held every Wednesday since 1310. A food market is always my first stop in any new town or village and Yorkshire’s many market towns are just made for foodie fanatics.

Knaresborough House

A historic building housing the town’s library and occasionally hosting art exhibitions and events. Knaresborough House is a historic building located in the heart of Knaresborough. Originally constructed in the late 17th century, it served as a residence for local gentry and has since been repurposed for various community and administrative uses.

The house features distinctive Georgian architecture with symmetrical facades and sash windows, reflecting its era of origin. Today, Knaresborough House hosts community events, local council meetings, and cultural activities, making it a hub of civic life in the town. I 

Knaresborough Museum

The museum tells the story of Knaresborough and you can earn about local history and heritage of Knaresborough and the surrounding area. Knaresborough Museum, is housed in a charming Victorian building, the museum showcases a diverse collection of artifacts, photographs, and exhibits spanning Knaresborough’s history.  

Bebra Gardens

A lovely park perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic, located near Knaresborough Castle. Known for its vibrant floral displays and serene atmosphere. Named after Knaresborough’s German twin town, Bebra, these gardens feature meticulously maintained flower beds, ornamental shrubs, and pathways that wind through lush greenery.

Blenkhorn’s Boats: These iconic green and red boats have been found at Knaresborough for over a hundred years. You can row yourself or hire someone to row for you.

Marigold’s Boat Hire: Marigold’s is the perfect place not only is it a café where you can sit and admire the views but you can also rent a boat here for £8.00 per adult.   

St. John the Baptist Church

Explore this historic church with beautiful architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. St. John’s Church, dating back to the 12th century, is another architectural gem in Knaresborough. The church’s Norman origins are evident in its architectural features, including the rounded arches and sturdy construction. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several renovations and additions, blending different architectural styles.

The church’s interior is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, and historical monuments. St. John’s Church continues to serve as a place of worship and community gathering, preserving its historical and spiritual significance.

Chapel of our Lady of the Crag

A tiny chapel carved into the solid rock of the Crag, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Sadly the Chapel is only open on Sundays but if you get a chance to visit check out the carving The Chapel was carved in 1408 by John the Mason who was a stonemason at Knaresborough Castle.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag, is a Marian shrine, on Abbey Road in Knaresborough. Carved directly from the sandstone cliff face of the river gorge, this chapel was part of the historical pilgrim route to the now-demolished Knaresborough Priory. Located close to an ancient stone quarry used for constructing Knaresborough Castle, the parish church, and other buildings, the chapel is also known as Quarry Chapel or Our Lady of the Quarry.

The House in the Rock

The House in the Rock is also known as Fort Montague, is a unique dwelling carved directly into the cliff face of the Nidd Gorge. This remarkable house, with its origins dating back to the late 18th century, was created by a local man named Thomas Hill. Hill spent several years carving out this residence, which includes various rooms and living spaces all cut from the rock.

Conyngham Hall Grounds

Explore the beautiful grounds and gardens of Conyngham Hall, including woodland trails. This is a public park set amidst historic gardens and woodland. Originally part of the Conyngham Hall estate, these grounds offer scenic walking paths, open green spaces, and serene views of the River Nidd.

Blind Jack of Knaresborough

John Metcalf, famously known as Blind Jack of Knaresborough, was an 18th-century road engineer and surveyor. Despite losing his sight at the age of six, Metcalf led an extraordinary life, contributing significantly to the development of turnpike roads in Northern England.

Metcalf’s remarkable achievements include the construction of numerous roads and bridges, showcasing his ingenuity and determination. His legacy as a pioneering engineer and his inspiring life story are celebrated in Knaresborough, with a statue erected in his honor in the market square.

Waterside Walk

You can walk down the steps at Knaresborough Castle to Waterside where you can walk to the Viaduct. Walking along you will spot several cafes to stop and have coffee or an icecream or even rent a boat or canoe to paddle the Nidd River.

Along the path you will see the Old Manor House built for King John. A little further downstream and closer to the weir are the Indigo Mill, Dye House and Castle Mill buildings that played a huge role in the linen industry of the area.

Along the path past the Viaduct you will spot the first bridge that was constructed in the 14th century. This original bridge, known as the Medieval Stone Bridge, played a pivotal role in connecting the town across the River Nidd. Constructed from locally quarried stone, it served as a vital transportation link, in the region. The bridge is currently closed but you can walk across from Abbey Road when visiting the Chapel in the Crag. Beside the bridge you will see the Mother Shipton Inn where we had a wonderful lunch sitting in the garden.

Along Waterside in Knaresborough, you can find several charming cafes, restaurants, and pubs that offer delightful dining experiences with scenic views of the River Nidd. Here are a few popular options:

Mother Shipton’s Inn: The Mother Shipton Inn has stood beside the Low Bridge of Knaresborough for hundreds of years and we enjoyed a lovely meal on the patio watching the River Nidd flow by.

Carriages Tea Rooms: A quaint tea room offering a variety of teas, coffees, homemade cakes, and light meals, located in a converted railway carriage.

Marigold Café: Known for its friendly atmosphere and delicious homemade food, including breakfast, brunch, and lunch options.

Blind Jack’s: A traditional pub named after John “Blind Jack” Metcalf, a famous local figure. It serves a selection of real ales and hearty pub food.

The Worlds End: Another historic pub with a riverside beer garden, offering a range of beers, wines, and pub meals.

The Boat House: A family-run restaurant with picturesque river views, specializing in seafood and traditional British dishes.

Six Poor Folk: Located in a historic building beside the Police station located in the parking lot of the Castle, this restaurant serves modern British cuisine with a focus on locally sourced ingredients.

Knaresborough Christmas Market

The Knaresborough Christmas Market, usually held in early December, brings festive cheer to the town. The market features a variety of stalls selling crafts, gifts, food, and drinks, set against the picturesque backdrop of the market square. Entertainment includes live music, carol singing, and visits from Santa Claus. The event creates a magical holiday atmosphere and provides an opportunity for local businesses to showcase their products.

Great Knaresborough Bed Race

The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is a mighty pageant of decorated beds, passengers and runners, combined with a gruelling athletic contest around a course of 2.4 miles. This year’s theme is “Great Inventions And Technology Through The Ages”.

Knaresborough Duck Race

This annual New Year’s Day favourite in Knaresborough offers a fun family day out a well as the chance to win a range of great prizes and support local charity Henshaws.  The duck race begins at High Bridge, next to the entrance to local attraction Mother Shipton’s Cave & Petrifying Well, where over 5000 rubber ducks will be launched into the river Nidd and will then make their way down to the finish line at Marigolds Cafe.

Knaresborough Forest

Just under an hour from Knaresborough you can visit Shibden Hall the home of the legendary “Gentleman Jack”. Shibden Hall, located near Halifax in West Yorkshire, is renowned for its association with Anne Lister, an influential figure in the early 19th century.
