Travelling in Europe

Europe: A continent located West of Asia and North of Africa, with 44 to 51 countries.

European Union (or EU): A political and economic union of 27 countries in Europe. Eurozone: A monetary union of 19 (or 25) European countries that use the euro (€) as their currency.

Do I need a visa to go to the United Kingdom? Most Canadians and North Americans (USA, Mexico) will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit the UK, including Northern Ireland. You can apply online in advance.

For most people traveling to the UK, the required visa is called an “Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)” which can be applied for online before travel, essentially replacing the need for a traditional visa for short stays like tourism or business visits.

What is an ETIAS?

If you’re planning a trip to Europe, a crucial new requirement is coming soon—the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This pre-travel authorization is designed to enhance security while making border control more efficient.

Starting in 2026, most travelers from visa-exempt countries will need ETIAS approval before entering EU countries in the Schengen Area.

If you’re from the United States, Canada, Australia, or other non-EU nations, obtaining ETIAS clearance will be a necessary step in your travel document preparation.
