If you are travelling to N. Ireland and are looking for a fantastic place to stay that is central to virtually every tourist attraction on the North Coast you need to check into the Old Manse in Ballycastle. We stayed at the Old Manse B&B in February of 2017, we booked our stay through booking.com and kept our fingers crossed that the place would be at least a good nights rest. We were going to book 2 nights but thought we would take one, just in case. BIG mistake.
We were greeted by the aroma of freshly ironed sheets and the owner of the Manse showed us to our room on the second floor. We had the luxury double bedroom with its own sitting room and a lovely quiet balcony at the back of the house. When we were shown the room we were over the moon, it was absolutely immaculate. The lovely double bed had fresh beautiful linens and a down comforter. The furniture was antique and lovingly finished with plenty of storage space.
The compact bathroom was clean and fresh with a fantastic power shower. The amenities were great, lovely fluffy towels and good quality products.
The little sitting room had a television, plenty of plugs to charge our phones and computer along with the free wifi. The balcony overlooked a lovely backyard and we could see the chickens that would give us fresh eggs in the morning. Each room or suite at the Manse has an en suite and you can choose your breakfast from full Irish to vegetarian.
Breakfast was cooked to perfection by our host and we opted for the full Irish which came with eggs, beans, sausage, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, fresh juice and great coffee. We had the dining room to ourselves for breakfast and we loved the fact that our host served breakfast and then just checked back on us once. We are not big fans of B&B’s because of what we feel is a certain lack of privacy and some hosts wanting to chat with us. Chatting is not a good thing in the morning when all I want is a coffee and to wake up properly so I loved this level of attention it was perfect hosting.
We found the place very easy as it was on the main road and managed to park right out front. The Manse is very conveniently located with a short walk to many restaurants, pubs and the harbour with its great views.
The Old Manse B & B is set in a house dating from 1899 it is only a short 5 minute walk to the town centre and there are many attractions with a short drive. You have some pretty unique views of Fairhead and Scotland from the top floor and can see some incredible sunsets. Plus if you fancy it you can go watch a hurling game across the road from the Manse. You can get to Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and the Giant’s Causeway in under 1/2 an hour. Don’t forget to check out the Dark Hedges and the Bushmills Brewery in the area. There are also great harbour tours available that will allow you to bird watch and see Ireland from the water.
My only gripe and this goes for all hotels, B&B’s, and lodging in both the UK and Ireland is the instant coffee. I know it’s stupidly picky but I just can’t live with instant…lol…but I have to say the morning coffee was excellent.
If you want to read more on touring Ireland and some of the best sights in the world you can read them here. Oh and you love a real full Irish breakfast you can see what that involves in this post a Full Irish.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention the price, it was about £85 per night and that included breakfast, given the prices in the UK we thought for this kind of luxury this was an absolute bargain price.
