Local art and artisans here on the Emerald Coast side of the Yucatan are a talented bunch from ex-pats to Mexicans there is some great art to be found. In Merida there are some phenomenal artists with their own studios and several galleries that specialize in presenting work from artists all over Mexico, local talent and art from Cuba, the Caribbean and Central/South America. There are several art tours that take place and the Merida English Library hosts many events in Merida from art tours to theatre events.
In this area (Chelem, Chuburna, Chixulub) there are several markets where you can buy work from local artisans and crafters, if you check out this post on Farmer’s Markets you will see where those markets are located.
Here is a few examples of some of the amazing work you will find in the area and some other locations where you can see people’s work.
The Bull Pen in Chelem (owned and operated by Jill and Martin originally from Colorado) hosts an artist evening with a wine and beer tasting every Wednesday. This has been immensely successful and several artists come in from Merida and other locations throughout the year. This is a great place to meet expats who are artists and artisans along with local artisans.
Rosy Peraza: A young and very talented local artist with a whimsical style, many here at the beach have Rosy’s work hanging on their walls and she makes all kinds of items such as handpainted furniture and boxes. A great colourful variety of items can be found whenever Rosy is at the markets.
Renee Frassoni : I am a huge fan of Renee’s work which is a great line of jewellery made from old watch parts. Renee is based in Merida and has come out to some of the Vino y Arte evenings held at the Bull Pen but you can also see her work here at Merida Art Link and on display in Merida at Medio Mundo Merida.
Deborah Blaney: You can see Deborah’s work on Merida Artlink and she does some beautiful prints on handmade paper, and her clocks and painted horseshoe crab shells are really cool. I really want one of these skull clocks.
Joan Paci: Joan has lived in Chuburna for 8 years and her hand sewn aprons, skirts and other items are featured in several stores in Merida but Joan can always be found at the Gypsy Market and Muelle Markets. Her items are exceptionally well made and she will make specialty items for you and different sizes. Joan has a FB page here
Randa Kaye Cherry this is a Youtube video of Randa Kaye’s work – she is a glass artist who sells her wor k in Merida and at the markets. Glorious glass work is Randa’s specialty.
Cindy Hill – Lol Ha Chelem can be found here at calle 19 #768 x 112 y 114. Cindy creates many beautiful one of a kind pieces (I particularly love her mosaic tables) and also does interior design consultations. There are lots of funky finds to be had here so don’t miss it when you visit Chelem.
Jose Armando Sanchez Infante I will let the pictures speak for themselves, but Jose is an incredibly talented artist.
Agustin one of my favourite artists here with a wide ranging style of paintings. Agustin has a remarkable ability to capture dramatic scenes that explode with light. His palette knife work is astounding and although I would love to buy a huge painting I was finally able to afford a much smaller work and hope to be able to buy more in the future.
