A new adventure for us and something we have always wanted to do, housesitting in Mexico. We had been looking for opportunities and narrowly missed a potential sit on Isla Mujeres. Perusing Facebook one day we spotted an emergency housesit in Progreso (Yucatan Coast). The young couple had to fly to Toronto due to a family emergency and needed someone to cover for them to mind a lovely colonial house with casita in Progresso.
There are 3 dogs, 1 cat and some goldfish. So we jumped in and said we could help, came out to meet them and the dogs and check out the location. The young couple were quite a remarkable pair, living in Panama and taking on housesits over South and Central America whilst carrying on with careers in journalism and design. We had a really good chat and they contacted the owner of the property to make sure she was happy, they checked our references and we were in. One day later and here we are by a private pool with a lovely casita behind us enjoying the blissful peace and quiet and headed out shortly to the beach to walk the puppies.
Housesitting is a great way to get to know a community. We were pretty lucky as we knew the community quite well and we had a car to get around with. Progreso is on the Yucatan Coast about 4 hours southwest of Cancun. At that time we were living in Chelem which is around 10 minutes from Progreso and we had gotten to know the area quite well. We had looked at several other housesitting opportunities in the area but there was none that fit us very well. This particular housesitting job sort of fell into our laps and we could not in our hearts let the dogs go to a doggy daycare as they were rescued street dogs and needed the consistency of their home.
The puppies are Nicki who is the black dog, Nicki was apparently abused and is very shy and skittish so she won’t come near us yet. Little love bug Chloe nudges you for petting and Maggie is somewhere in between, we have seen the cat a few times but it moved to quick for a picture.
